Manufacturing companies increasingly need to create an understanding of their products in the global marketplace. Often, this means large translation costs and an increased volume of printed or published material. This results in a version control problem that can grow exponentially with increasing product variants, targeted solutions and new markets. The users of the increasingly complex product information, sellers, installers, service technicians, etc., all require comprehensive information so that they can use their time effectively.

These challenges have led to an increased interest in a “textless” presentation of product information. Condesign are market leaders in transforming traditional installation instructions and maintenance manuals to textless documents, saving time and money, both for our customers and our customers' customers!

Retail has also benefited greatly from our knowledge of the effective use of packaging in stores to create a more intuitive understanding of a product’s use!

From Text-based to Picture-based

JELD-WEN provides many door types, with varying design standards, to virtually any application. Installations of doors are made by end users as well as professionals in the industry. A common visual identity was needed for the installation instructions as well as an improved clarity in instructions.

With the help of photography during installation, verbal briefing and starting from JELD-WEN's graphic identity, we have developed largely textless installation instructions. Both end users and professionals appreciate the clarity of the instructions and can quickly understand the steps to be taken through a descriptive illustration.

JELD-WEN now has a common profile for instructions, reduced translation costs and a clear, educational material.

User-friendly Instructions

Husqvarna manufacture products to homeowners, landowners, and professionals in forestry, green areas and the construction industry. Instructions and manuals must be clear and accurate for the safe use of the products.

Texts and illustrations are produced completely in accordance with Husqvarna's graphic identity. Some areas focus on textless information, using educational images in place of text. Products and practices change and market research is carried out at regular intervals to ensure that instructions are properly understood.

Technical Information for the Construction Industry

The customer had marketing materials and installation instructions in the same document, and thus had too much information to marketing purposes while the updates of the installation instructions lagged behind, partly due to printing costs. The customer wanted to reduce the amount of text and produce clearer installation instructions. The product documentation is regarded as a key part of the product, not only for the installer but also to get a properly installed finished product, which is a strong competitive advantage. There is also money to be saved in support when highlighting the right steps in the assembly instructions.

Condesign made a first, separate, installation instruction that was clearer and more image-based. We also produced a style guide that specifies how the installation instructions should be made in the future.

It is now much easier for Icopal to keep their documentation updated. Their marketing material now has a longer lifespan and is more expensive to print than the installation instructions. The amount of text to be maintained has been reduced and the installation instructions are more clearly profiled. We are redoing the installation instructions as guidelines for Icopal’s new style.
